And only Edgar and Leon know of the inevitable showdown between the world of men and the darkness, that will soon bring the realm to the brink of destruction...

I'm glad I read the author's "Empire of War" novel, which I really liked, before I read this one, which I didn't. I know that I wouldn't have given that one a try if I'd read this first.

The biggest problem with the book is that the author tried to stuff way to much story into a small number of pages. Imagine if you will LotR stuffed into less than 250 pages, that's an approximation of what occurs here.

The setting is interesting and the basis for the story is really good, but the execution was lacking. The peoples, places and creatures were never fleshed out and the ending was anti-climatic. You are never truly engaged in any of the main characters and I ended up doing the thing that guarantees a low review and that's the dreaded "skimming" in an attempt to get through.

I would love to see a story using the Marauders, but with a more epic story, whereby a more realistic and sympathetic hero sets out to stop them, with a fully fleshed out world and peoples.

In my opinion this is one to skip.

Blood Rain A Song of Death Victor Methos 9781492861461 Books Reviews

I am loathe to stop reading an author whom I have come to admire so much and of whom I have read and reviewed some forty plus books. But, subsequent to reviewing those, this is likely my last review of his work. Frankly, the last five books I’ve read by Methos have led me to this decision. In truth it was all I could stomach to finish reading Blood Rain.
This review will not be a review of that book. Unlike all prior reviews, it will not detail such analysis as plot, character development, rising/falling action, anti climax, and resolution. I don’t summarize story lines in my reviews, leaving that to the writer who I regard as doing that eminently better than can I.
This review will, in part, offer my thoughts on the many books of his that have garnered 5 stars over the course of several years of reading his books. This book, as an anomaly to that history gets 2 stars. I can’t bring myself to give this book 1 star because in the face of all prior reads up to the last few I couldn’t conceive of my “hating” anything authored by Victor Methos until now. So I will leave it as a 2 star review.
I have reported in the past that among the crime thriller writers, Victor Methos gets a most honorable mention. I refer to such writers as Connolly, Grisham, and Lehane as three that come readily to mind of authors I’ve read copiously. What intrigued me most about Methos was his ability to get inside the head of his characters, both protagonist and antagonist. There are many of his books I can recite as an example for that opinion, but the Jon Stanton series stands out for that characteristic. Plots aside, Methos has an uncanny ability as a behaviorist of human nature to analyze what his characters are thinking and why. I consider Dennis Lehane to be the master of that ability in that he places me as the proverbial “fly on the wall” of what his characters are thinking and what they plan to do next. When Methos describes the scene of the crime, grisly as it can appear to the protagonist, the description does not come off as gratuitous in its detail. We are dealing with human behavior after all. And we know that such behavior can be quite gritty at times. But, in its extreme, what we want to know is not only what act the antagonist performed, but, why they were compelled to do it. In other words their behavior leading them to act in such a way is the crux of the story under scrutiny. And, understanding that behavior is what makes his books so compelling to the crime thriller genre.
I think what has led me away from this most gifted author are those story lines that delve otherwise into acts of extreme cruelty solely for cruelty sake. These story lines have been in more of a supernatural setting using, for example in Blood Rain, gods of unearthly origin whose actions have not been understandable from a human perspective. The human element has taken a back seat away from the genre I found most appealing. It is one I don’t identify with or certainly am interested in reading. If/when Mr. Methos returns to the genre of which I’ve read so much by him, I’ll be back. However, until that time I’m signing off from further reading of this author.
I love this book. I could not put it down. I am hoping there will be more to come. This is a beginning of a great series. Great job.
Didn't finish. That usually means I got uninterested, Why, I'm not sure. It's just that the bad was too nasty and black and the good was only luke warm? Depressing maybe? Could not identify with the characters. Sorry, just got half way. Maybe it got better, can't say.
the characters are developed as if for a life work series like The Wheel of Time, Boxed Set I, Books 1-3 The Eye of the World, The Great Hunt, The Dragon Reborn by Robert Jordan. The good versus evil plot layers are tectonic plates meeting in many vectors. A long plane ride is an excellent venue for the book. I am disappointed that is is not the first of a series. fortunately the author has other works.
